What If We Are the Microbes?: A Philosophical Science Fiction Essay By Dr. Von Apochi

What if the greatest mistake humanity has ever made is believing we are big enough to matter?

Pause for a moment and look at your own body. Trillions of microorganisms are living inside you right now. They are born, feed, multiply, communicate, compete, evolve, and die. Some protect you, others harm you, and many simply exist in balance. Yet none of them has the slightest idea that you exist.

To a gut bacterium, the large intestine is the entire universe.

It has no concept of your face, your family, your dreams, or your purpose. It cannot imagine mountains because its world is a moist tunnel. It has never seen the sky because its "sky" is the intestinal wall. Every discovery its greatest scientists could ever make would still occur inside a world it does not realize belongs to someone else.

Now ask yourself a terrifying question.

What if we are exactly the same?

Imagine that humanity is only one microscopic layer in an endless ladder of life. Somewhere beyond our imagination could exist beings so enormous that we appear to them exactly as bacteria appear to us.

Perhaps they do not call us humans.

Perhaps we are simply one species among countless microscopic organisms living on a tiny spherical cell they study under unimaginably powerful instruments.

Science already teaches us that microorganisms come in many shapes. Some bacteria are spherical (cocci), others are rod-shaped (bacilli), spiral (spirilla), comma-shaped (vibrios), or elongated like tiny threads. Viruses display astonishing geometry, icosahedral, filamentous, helical, bullet-shaped, and more. Shape influences how they move, survive, and interact with their environment.

What if the same principle applies at every level of existence?

Perhaps our own world is shaped by the body of a much larger organism.

Earth, Mars, Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, and even our Sun may not simply be planets and stars. They could each represent individual living structures, cells, organs, or specialized organisms whose spherical form reflects the biology of their own existence.

Maybe a planet is simply what life looks like at their scale.

Perhaps our Solar System is only one microscopic organ.

The Milky Way may be nothing more than one continent inside their world, while the Andromeda Galaxy is another distant continent separated by vast biological space. Galaxy clusters might resemble oceans. Dark matter may function like connective tissue. Gravity could be their chemistry, binding everything together just as molecular forces bind our own cells.

To them, our greatest telescopes may be equivalent to bacteria looking farther down the intestine.

The similarities become even more fascinating.

Microorganisms compete for nutrients.

Human civilizations compete for resources.

Bacteria form biofilms.

Humans build cities.

Microbes exchange genetic information to survive.

Humans exchange knowledge, technology, and culture.

Some bacteria protect the body by maintaining balance. Others become destructive when they multiply uncontrollably.

Perhaps good people serve a similar purpose. Those who plant trees, preserve ecosystems, care for others, and leave the world healthier than they found it resemble beneficial bacteria maintaining the health of a larger organism.

Those who destroy forests, pollute rivers, exploit others, and spread violence may resemble harmful pathogens disrupting the balance.

From the perspective of that greater being, both groups simply influence the health of the whole.

Even our medical triumphs take on a new meaning.

A person living beyond one hundred years may be viewed the way microbiologists study antibiotic-resistant bacteria, a rare, fascinating strain that somehow survives against the odds.

Someone who defeats cancer, overcomes chronic disease, or survives impossible circumstances might simply possess remarkable biological resilience.

Evolution rewards survival at every scale.

Why should ours be the final one?

Now stretch your imagination further.

What if microorganisms possess civilizations of their own?

If they had consciousness, perhaps they would create governments, write history books, develop mathematics, compose music, and argue over philosophy.

Maybe they would have religions.

Some might believe that after death they enter a better world beyond the intestine. Others might reject the idea completely. They could debate the existence of an invisible Creator while living inside one every second of their existence.

Sound familiar?

Their greatest scientists might spend generations searching for the edge of their universe, never realizing they are standing inside someone else's body.

Perhaps we are doing exactly the same.

The most beautiful part of this idea is that it is not a scientific claim. It is philosophical science fiction built upon genuine scientific observations. Biology already reveals that life exists in layers. Every organism depends on smaller organisms. Every ecosystem contains ecosystems within it. Patterns repeat across nature with astonishing consistency.

Science has not shown that we live inside a giant organism.

Neither has it ruled the possibility out.

Sometimes imagination arrives where evidence has not yet reached.

Perhaps one day we will discover that the universe is stranger than we ever imagined.

Or perhaps we never will.

But tonight, before you dismiss the tiny bacteria living inside your body as insignificant, remember this:

They wake up every day believing their world is everything that exists.

Maybe...

...so do we.
