The Art of the Basic Nine Design Principles for Building Compelling Data Viz
By Taghogho Von Apochi:
I will make this beautiful artistic science simplified and the rest is left to your creative imagination. I want to delve into using art elements and design principles to express effective visualizations in a simplified form. over the years as an experienced data manager I have learned to love the basic nine design principles for building compelling and informative data visualizations. These design principles are what I call the fundamental building blocks of data visualization. Let me list them: 1.Balance, 2.Emphasis, 3.Movement, 4.Pattern, 5.Repetition, 6.Proportion, 7.Rhythm, 8.Variety, and 9.Unity.
The first six principles focus on design considerations during creation, such as achieving balance in element distribution, emphasizing key points, guiding viewer attention through movement, creating patterns, utilizing repetition, and demonstrating proportion. Examples include balanced column charts, emphasized heat maps, and movement-inducing combo charts.
The next three principles serve as checks for finished visualizations. Rhythm involves creating a sense of flow for your data-viz, variety ensures engagement without confusion, touching every element of your data with flare of everything important, and unity emphasizes the importance of a cohesive final product. A pie chart and table dashboard illustrates proportion, emphasizing the focal point. These principles provide guidance for data analysts in creating effective and interesting visualizations.
What is better interesting than a visualization with the viz-framework imbued in all its design principles? The framework for which the principles are expressed are: 1.Information, 2.Story, 3.Goal, 4.Visual form. Let me describe these framework as my closing remark: Information: the fact or data you are working with. Story: The concept or clear narrative that expresses the entire visualization. Goal: A well spelt out objective or reason for the visual Visual form: the prolific expression of the visual or the effective use of metaphor.
I hope this gives a clear meaning to the design principle.
